HP Ink Cartridge Complaints

HP Ink Cartridge Lawsuit Investigation Attorneys at The Arns Law Firm are investigating reports that Hewlett Packard recently manipulated many of its printers in a way that disables the printers when a non-HP ink cartridge is used, thereby forcing customers to buy more expensive ink cartridges from HP.

According to reports, starting around September 13, 2016, thousands of users of HP OfficeJet, OfficeJet Pro, and OfficeJet Pro X printers began receiving error messages on their printers when trying to print using non-HP branded ink cartridges.

The error messages reportedly read:

Cartridge Problem. The following ink cartridges appear to be missing or damaged. Replace the cartridges and resume printing.

Printer Failures Experienced by Thousands

According to reports, HP wirelessly installed a firmware update into the affected printers—without notice to the users—in March of 2016, but the update was programmed to not come into effect until September 13, 2016. The firmware update reportedly operates by displaying the error message and disabling the printer when non-HP ink is detected.

When the firmware update went into effect in September, many people and small ink cartridge retailers complained. In the midst of the scandal, HP issued a statement about the firmware update, stating that “the update included a dynamic security feature that prevented some untested third-party cartridges that use cloned security chips from working, even if they had previously functioned.” HP stated that the purpose was to protect HP’s intellectual property and protect its customers from security risks.

The Arns Law Firm is investigating whether HP violated federal antitrust laws and state consumer protection laws by causing HP printers to fail when using non-HP ink.
